Sainsbury's in Deal has staged a hero's homecoming today for Shaun Turnbull, the store's trolley man who was savagely attacked by two men.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the assault two weeks ago, when the 46-year-old was hit around the head, possibly with an iron bar. He is still recovering from his ordeal.

His sister, Debby Brown, said Shaun would not require an operation, although his cheekbone would remain slightly out of place. She said Shaun had been "perked up" by people's good wishes.

Sainsbury's manager Glenn Adams said: "We have been overwhelmed with people's generosity to Shaun since the attack.

"He has touched the hearts of so many people to a degree we would have never imagined- we have all been taken aback.

"Customers are still coming in to donate money for Shaun and they are still very concerned about him.

"So we thought we would organise a hero's homecoming lunch in our canteen, with balloons and banners.

"We even had a call from Deal Cars offering the fantastic offer of free taxi journeys to work when he is feeling better."

Jack Golding, owner of DealCars, said he did not want Mr Turnbull worrying about walking to and from his job at night. He said: "While it is dark we volunteer to drive him free of charge between his home and work.

"Shaun is everyone's friend. A lovely guy and a smashing bloke. I am an ex-copper and this sort of crime annoys me."

On Saturday night Mr Turnbull was invited to the Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown Regatta Association selection night for the new carnival court and was given a surprise double medal presentation (see picture left).

Association chairman John Trickey said: "He is a gentle man who has taken part in our carnivals. So we presented him with two special carnival awards. He came onto the stage and told me he was looking forward to returning to work."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack about 7.20pm on Thursday, January 26, in Church Path, Bowling Green Lane, Deal.

Two white men, aged about 18 with dark hair, demanded money from Mr Turnbull but he was not carrying any, so they hit him across the head and ran away. His injuries included a cracked cheekbone.
