Joyous Return For Mr Shaw

Overjoyed: Bill Shaw, centre, reunited with his wife Liz and grandchildren Caius and MadeleineFormer military policeman Bill Shaw MBE was released from prison earlier this month after being cleared of corruption charges on July 4.

Mr Shaw, 52, who went straight to his daughter Lisa's home in Old Park Close after flying back into the UK last week, told the Express how happy he was to finally be back on British soil.

"Words can't describe how it feels to be back with my family," he said. "It's amazing.

"We arrived in Dover on Thursday evening, my grandchildren were still up and it was fantastic to see them. I hardly slept that night as I was so excited, and in the morning greeted a very rainy Dover, which was great as I hadn't seen rain for months."

Mr Shaw, who spent 28 years in the army and retired as a major, was working for security firm G4S when he was found guilty of bribery and jailed for two years on April 26. His family never doubted his innocence, with his wife Liz and daughter Lisa spearheading a campaign to clear his name and get him freed.

Thousands of people backed the campaign online and a petition was delivered by his family to Downing Street, but Bill says he only learned of the extent of the support for his cause once he had his liberty restored.

He said: "While I was in prison I was blind to what was going on at home. I knew about the petition but had no idea of what was really going on. It's only since I've returned to the UK that I've realised the true scale of support.

"I'm massively thankful not just for myself but for the comfort this gave my family, too."

During his ordeal Bill was imprisoned in three different jails, including the notorious Poli Charki prison near Kabul, known as the Afghan Alcatraz, and he described the dehumanising effect of being locked up.

"The lowest point of my ordeal was being stripped of my identity and having my head shaved to the bone," he said. "I could cope with the terrible food and disgusting conditions but this was humiliating and affected me badly.

"I didn't want my family to know the full extent of what I had to endure, including the $10,000 bounty on my head, because I wanted to protect them.

"Now we want to catch up with family and friends, and then go on an extended holiday to rest and recuperate."
